The mindset of breaking the 6 figure mark is not the same mindset you need to have in order to break through into multi six figures per year or to the million dollar a year mark and beyond.

It’s different.

I remember when I first started out it was all about the hustle. The grind. I was burning candles at both ends and then breaking them in half and burning each end of those. It was ridiculous and of course, unsustainable. (I do NOT recommend this to anyone. The beauty of hindsight, right?)

A client yesterday asked a question about what it was that changed in April of 2012 when finally, after about 18months of being in business, I finally broke past the $10K/month mark…

This is what I said:

I decided to hand everything over to the Universe and do a ‘last ditch effort’ in order to keep going. What this meant for me, was that I launched a brand new advertising campaign (stressing about spending $10/day on ads) and I literally said “If this is what I’m supposed to be doing, then come on! This needs to freaking work.

I was scared. Filled with fear. Trepidation.

I did NOT want this to fail. I did not want to have to go and get a job. I did not want to have to beg for my old job back. I didn’t want the feelings of anticipated shame and judgement.

 

So I needed to let it all go.

I decided that it HAD to work. There was no choice. No option. No ifs buts or maybe’s.

 

And it did work. I launched it on the 24th April 2012 and in May I had my first $30K month.

 

The business went from strength to strength, stride to stride. I remember doing $118K in sales in a week (and got a tattoo to remind me to keep the faith) and then I did $550K in sales in a week and broke all kinds of records and felt unstoppable and invincible. I ran a retreat that I felt so aligned and excited to offer and got a tattoo to remind me to follow my dreams. In French, because, well, it’s a romantic language and looks better on my arm than the English words would have!!!!!

This worked for me for a long time. I had clients all around the world.

 

I was making great money. Creating SIGNIFICANT impact in people’s lives

Seeing businesses that my clients were running go from strength to strength. Them getting client after client, making more money each month, month in and month out.

I was doing a lot of good, motivating, inspiring, educating, teaching, hanging out in my zone of genius…

 

And I decided that I wanted to do more than $1M per year……

But…. It wasn’t to be.

 

I had some family stuff going on that required me to scale back.

I also decided that I wanted to change what it was that I was teaching (which was pretty much straight Internet Marketing training. Think: ads, funnels, etc etc) and while it was GREAT, needed and necessary I always felt like there was something more for me, than just being another ‘IMer’…..

 

The thing that I LOVED about what I was doing, was how I was weaving success mindset strategies in with the training. Heavy duty mindset work.

 

Giving permission to people to be themselves. To embrace their creativity. To be the version of them that they wanted to be.

 

But on the front end from the advertising and marketing perspective, it was more about ‘this is how we use the internet to market ourselves’……

 

Not that there’s anything wrong with that… but it wasn’t what I wanted to do or be for the rest of my life. I didn’t want to be KNOWN as ‘the FB Ads Person Or the Internet Marketing Person” or “The funnels person”.

 

So I decided that a reinvention was in order.

A pivot

 

A shift.

 

A change…

 

Not only in the ‘thing’ that I was selling, but also the way that I was doing what it was that I was doing.

There is something that happens when you reach a significant goal, and that is often the question of “is this it? Is this really all worth it?” and “Why is this goal really important”…

 

I’ve always been super clear on my ‘why’ (which as we all know is super important when we have a SOUL-ON-FIRE desire to do amazing work in the world) and I can tell you that it wasn’t about having $1M in my account. I couldn’t have cared less about that, really. It was about what I would do with that money.

The key questions I asked myself is “Why do I need to make $1M/year” and “Why is it even important” and things like that.

It took me a long time to get my mindset back in the game and actually DECIDE that I DO want to make $1M/year and beyond.

 

I have massive goals around what I want to do with that money and what that money represents.

I know WHY I want it…

 

Do you know why you want what you want?

For me, I know that with every reinvention, pivot and change, it requires a MASSIVE leap of faith.

A test of your commitment to your SOUL

A test of your commitment to your faith.

 

To your zone of genius.

 

Because what would happen if you decided, REALLY DECIDED, to only do the work that really lights you up and sets your soul on fire?

Naturally (well, for most of us) there will be FEAR that kicks in – I know it did for ME.

 

The fear of this ‘new thing’ not working because people have always paid you for XYZ.

The fear of the ‘new thing’ not making money because your audience really knows you for the things that you’ve been doing and saying up to this point.

 

When you step IN and have the courage to be you, in all your badassness, there will be some who don’t really ever get it.

 

IT’S SCARY TAKING THAT LEAP AWAY FROM THE THINGS THAT YOU KNOW HAVE WORKED IN THE PAST BUT YOU KNOW INHERENTLY THAT IT WON’T WORK FOR YOU INTO THE FORSEEABLE FUTURE.

 

I flip flopped. I am an expert in marketing and advertising and Facebook but there is so much more to me than ‘just’ that.

What we do (trailblazers, non-corporate peeps, creatives, coaches, leaders. Rockstars, artists, mavens, rebels, Queens and non-conformists, just so we’re clear on who I’m talking to!!!) is different.

We tried to fit in the 9 dots and it broke things.

It’s not just about the money.

It’s not just about the fame.

 

It’s not just about the performing.

 

It’s not just about how what we do feeds us….

 

IT’S ABOUT HOW THIS IN TURN IMPACTS THE WORLD FOR THE BETTER…

I was told at one point to suck it up and keep selling what I was because I was known by ‘too many people’ as the Facebook person. WTF?? Yep. “Don’t follow your heart, Nicola, follow the money”…

 

Here’s the deal.

Look at the music industry as an example of the good that can come out of this:

 

Taylor reinvented herself.

 

Lady Gaga reinvented.

 

Madonna reinvented

 

Robbie left the boy band.

 

Gwen went out on her own.

 

Actors reinvent themselves all the time.

They train.

 

They practice.

They follow faith and trust and the hell with what anyone else thinks.

 

I burned my business to the ground and still did 6 figures in my business by following my intuition, trust, faith and alignment. And it’s building back, month on month.

 

I have more freedom than ever.

 

More fun than ever.

 

More flow.

More joy.

 

Aligned clients.

 

Better results.

My clients are getting better results.

 

What did I do???

 

I pretty much threw the ‘rule book’ in the bin and reinvented.

I decided to TRUST IN ME. Which sounds easy, right?

 

I mean, it is in theory… but for those of us who love external and LOUD validation…. When we reinvent it can be tough

 

Cause there are really very very very few people who ‘get it’.

 

I still have down days. Jessie J even shared recently that she does, too.

 

A J LO quote I saw said even with successful albums and acting, she wondered if she was done or still ‘had it’.

 

We all have doubts.

We all have moments, periods, blips, bumps, where we wonder ‘is this it’? And if it is, I don’t it!!!!!

 

It’s time to tap into some of that reinvention alchemy that you have within you and activate it. Turn the key.

 

You must BACK YOURSELF.

 

You must TRUST.

You must LEAP.

 

You need to know, just like when Indy walked on those invisible steps in The Last Crusade, that the step you need to step on WILL APPEAR…. But only when you trust that the step is going to appear!!!!
