With summer just around the corner, the inevitable questions start to pop up – what bathers should I buy….how regularly do I need to shave…should I book in for a wax….maybe it’s time to start laser hair removal?

I received a message from a lady a couple of weeks ago asking for the answers to the questions above. I’ve spent a couple of weeks asking some other women if these are things that they’d also like to know more about – and they’ve said yes!! So, here we are!!

1. Bathers

This is often a topic that ends in a frustrating shopping trip (or 3!!). Particularly when you ‘need’ a second opinion on what looks good. Only to have the sales-girl (who’d probably look great in a bathing suit!) peek around the curtain and offer her opinion. It can be challenging! My advice is this:

– Choose a pair of bathers that are appropriate for the activity that you’re doing. If you’ve decided to embark on a journey that involves adult swimming lessons then I’d suggest a one-piece suit …. you can purchase bathers that give you extra support around your middle in need – ruching can be an added advantage if you’re wanting support but with some softness to the suit

– Bathers absolutely change their shape in the water, so ensure you purchase a suit that is going to grip to your skin….wardrobe malfunctions in the water are not good! Especially if you’re going to wear a bikini…ensure your top piece fits you without revealing too much!

2. Shave/Wax/IPL

Make sure you book in for a wax if this is your ‘thing’ or shave….or ensure you’ve had your IPL treatment done in enough time to ensure you don’t have surprises – nobody likes to see your jungle!!!!!!

If you haven’t had enough time to do the above, invest in a pair of swimming shorts so that you CAN swim without worrying about ‘extras’ being revealed to the world!

3. Change-room Etiquette

Believe it or not, some women are self conscious about getting changed in a public change room. Particularly when you’re trying to peel off wet bathers that are like peeling off a wetsuit! At times we can become great contortionists!! Please keep in mind the following tips to ensure that you’re feeling as comfortable as possible (and keeping other ladies’ comfort in mind, too)

– DO NOT under any circumstances comment on another ladies’ body (including tattoos, piercings or things you would describe as a ‘positive’ asset on someone else). ESPECIALLY if you don’t know her. A story that was shared by one of my ladies was that another woman leaned over while she was getting changed and commented on a tattoo that she had on her breast. This IS NOT appropriate!!!

– Keep your eyes to yourself as much as possible.

– If you are bringing your children into a change-room be aware of the other ladies in the room. I have 3 children (2 daughters and a son) and I am aware that they are curious. They don’t know where to look, the women don’t know where to look…it can be incredibly uncomfortable. If you have the ability to use a family change-room then use it! Otherwise, in most swimming facilities they have private change-rooms within the main changing area….shepherd your young flock into a private change-room and get ready in there. Again….this is the ideal situation and I know it’s not always appropriate…simply being aware of the other women in the room and acting accordingly is a decent thing to do.

If you have any questions, please let me know!
