I remember in Primary School putting on performance after performance with my friends. Dancing to Cher’s “Turn back time”, practicing at lunch time and then doing them for the class after lunch. Doing handstands against the classroom, having FUN!

My school was chosen to go on a TV show on Channel 9 back in the day. It was a kids show where you had to do dares and there was slime challenge…. And oh my gosh I desperately wanted to get on there!!!

You can imagine my sheer DELIGHT when in year 5 I was chosen (I can’t remember how this happened) to go on television. I’ve written before about my desire as a kid to be on television, and I thought this was my ticket!!!!! My best friend and I were both on there. I was in heaven.

It’s interesting how things appeared on set and off set with this experience. There were things everywhere. Rigs , cameras, teleprompters, seating and the green room… oh I felt oh so fancy!

I thought that perhaps this could be my big break. You know how it happens in the movies? Yep!!!! I believed it was going to happen.

Except that it didn’t!!! It didn’t sky rocket me to fame or anything like that. Just a segment on a kids tv show!!! But it felt AMMMMMAZING.

The thing about waiting for the ‘big break’ is that it’s often created by YOURSELF, right? It’s the hard yards. It’s the showing up. It’s the endless days and nights practicing your craft and putting yourself out there.

It’s like in business, far too often we’re under the mistaken illusion that the ad we’re creating will change everything.

That the posts we put up will bring forth a sleigh full of clients.

That the next program we’re about to launch is going to revolutionise the world…..

And the truth of the matter is this:

Everything that we do works incrementally.

The small steps you take today add combine with the steps you take tomorrow, which roll into the steps you take the following day.

I have chosen to believe that every single thing that is continuously and constantly building up to something bigger and better and having me do even more of what I love (which is helping YOU in case you were wondering!).

I believe that every thing combines and at some point in time we get ‘our big break’…. But without consistent momentum and without consistent commitment, it doesn’t happen.

We hear story after story about actors being turned away. Sylvester Stallone was knocked back 1000* times before someone said yes to his script (I may have remembered the number incorrectly but it was a large SIGNIFICANT number) for Rocky.

We only see the successes of people…. It’s not often we’re shown the behind the scenes stuff that they had to go through to get to where they are.

There are NO overnight successes. Well, not that I’m aware of, anyway.

Everything you’ve ever learned, said, done, experienced has been preparing you for your big break… but you’ve got to keep working it in order to bring it to life.

Over the past couple of years I’ve had the blessing of being in television studios again. I was reminded of the awe that I felt as a child seeing the set up. Sitting in the green room and recognising someone from television.

I got to meet Guy Sebastian in the green room. Hung out with Sonya and Richard on set. (I use the words ‘hung out’ very loosely!!! We chatted for a few minutes, did the segment, chatted some more and I was off!!!!!).

I have had the honour of running amazing events and participating in amazing events. It gave the taste again for them.

So what I ultimately want to capture and create every day, is that feeling of childhood joy of practicing my performance like I did in primary school.

Where, with complete confidence and self-abandonment I just revelled in the FUN of creating, of exploring my voice, of trying different things and playing with a group of girls who all loved doing the same things!

That’s what I want every day….

To play. To experience joy. To experience fun. To experience being a part of someone’s world. To entertaining. To helping. To serving. To making money. To finding more and more out about me as a human. To learning. To giving. To being.
