As I’m sitting here this morning thinking about what I wanted to share today, I had a moment where I was thinking about this time last year.
This time last year I was counting down the sleeps to watch Queen + Adam Lambert LIVE in Melbourne. The weather was weird.
I remember the summer of 2019/2020 we went on a cruise over xmas and it was NOT warm for the majority of the time we were away. It made us feel like we should have been on a Canadian Cruise rather than a South Pacific one! I think out of the whole 10 days were away, we had maybe 3 hot/warm days! The rest of the days I pretty much had the sole hoodie I took away with us on. I didn’t even come with a tan FFS!!! 😉 First world problems, I know. The good news, however, was that we were not on the cruise that experienced a volcano eruption and we disembarked about a month before the world went mad and cruise ships became the breeding ground for the dreaded Rona. I can’t even imagine being locked in the house with the 5 of us let alone being locked in a tiny room with a window that didn’t open whilst isolating. That would have SUCKED big time.
Needless to say I am grateful for the timing of that trip!!!!
Then February hit. And again, the weather was not warm!!! We had Queen + Adam Lambert booked in. For a Feb concert. The year before we saw the Gunners LIVE in Februrary, in Melbourne, and we were warm! I was expecting the same kind of weather.
But no.
It rained. It poured. It was cold!! It was quite the experience watching the band play and Adam sing in the rain!
Made for a great memory!!!! I remember asking Dom when he went for a walk to get a drink for a hot tea!! I didn’t even want the tea for my mouth… my hands were FREEEEZING!!!
We had our first Roller Derby training camp happen in Feburary. That was freaking amazing!!!!!
Then… not long after I got home from that, I ran a retreat on a houseboat here in Mildura with my fing amazing Rebel Squad mastermind peeps. That was awesome! Again, not real hot hhahahhaa!!
To me, this is where expectations and reality do not meet! HA! My best laid plans for some R&R and connection and warmth and sun were not all met in the way I anticipated they’d be met.
Instead, it was a helluva lot different.
And different is ok. Different was actually still excellent. Just different.
For me, I got to play the sport I love, I got to hang with clients I love, I got to holiday with my family whom I love, I got to go to Queen with the man I love…. And I got to sign a contract with my very FIRST EVER PUBLISHER! Woot! I love that, too.
And then Victoria got locked down and we saw only ourselves for much of the year!!!
It’s a super interesting time to be reflecting, I think.
There will be times where your expectations of how things should happen will not be met.
There will be times that things just simply don’t go our way.
Your job, at all times, is to remember that you’ve got this. That you can and will find a way to do what you want, get what you want and be how you want… but perhaps it will look a little different to the way that you might like or prefer.
2020 was the year of the pivot.
I think 2021 is the year of saying fuck this shit and finding a way (perhaps a new way for some of you) to achieve what you want.
To help who you want.
To make the money that you want.
To find a way that works for YOU.
It can still be a great year!!!
Let go of any and all expectations and just put your head down and do what you can, and do what needs to be done.
You’ve got this xxx
