I remember in about 2005 I was wondering how I could make enough money in my side hustle to pay for a holiday each year. I had started a business importing jewellery which I sold both wholesale around the country and at our local markets. I built my own website and very very slowly was learning more about how to make that work.
I loved that little business… it was where I cut my teeth on building a website, learning about marketing, learning about packaging to increase the average spend per client. I had a blast chatting to people about how to wear certain pieces, how to mix and match and how what to wear with what.
I sucked at first and it took me F O R E V E R to learn how to build the website.. then it broke and I decided to learn how to do it all on WordPress.
One of the things that I think has helped me for YEARS is that I have quite a systematic-style-creative brain! (not to be confused with a ‘design’ brain. That, I’m afraid never eventuated!!).
So when I kicked into this business in 2010 I had lists I was pretty organised. I knew what I wanted to create. I had lists, endless lists, of all of the things that I knew I needed to do.
I actually came across some photos yesterday when I was looking for a photo of my daughter for her to use at school from when she was less than 5years old…Man I had endless ideas and thoughts and plans…
And was STUCK for most of the time.
I was good at doing ‘busy work’. The things that weren’t revenue-generating!!! Thing like research and trying to design a logo and tweaking the website for the billionth time. Writing out courses that I hadn’t sold yet – and never sold, actually.
One of the big things that changed for me, was learning how to offer discovery calls on Facebook. That changed a LOT for me!
It got me my first clients.
This is what I’d ask:
- Tell me a bit about yourself
- What was it that prompted you to pop your details in to have chat?
- What are your biggest challenges with your personal brand?
- What are you missing out on because of these?
- What do you really want?
- What would that mean for you?
Then, I’d give them a couple of things that they could do right now to move forward.
Then, I’d ask them if they had any questions… and you know what? 95% of them asked me how I could help them personally.
All from regularly posting on Facebook.
All from offering value first.
All from a place of being willing to get off the phone without making an offer if they didn’t ask ME for help.
From memory, 7/10 people bought from me on those calls!
Over the years, I learned more and more. There were days when I made 80 calls in a day to talk to people! I called these hybrid online sales. The sales process started online and continued on the phone. I hired sales people (including my Dad for years).
Then, I learned more about how to make sales online only, because I did not want to do sales over the phone anymore. I didn’t want to have a team of sales people.
I knew there had to be a better way!
And I found it.. which is how I now enrol clients.
Want to learn how to do that while being YOU the ENTIRE time?
It will surprise you to end that I have a system for it 😉
