Flick the switch

Flick the switch

I noticed that I was trying to grab onto a tiny thread of inspiration as I contemplated in my journal what to share.

I was getting stuck in my head. The critic was there. Ugly, loud and over bearing. Telling me that I was a fake and fraud. That anyone can help people with what you do. That nobody is going to listen. That it doesn’t matter what you put out there, it’s not going to motivate people to buy from you. Pfft. You’re just another….. well, what hope do you have, really? You should probably just accept the fact that maybe you’re destined to only have a handful of people in your programs. These dream of grandeur and wealth and inspiring tens of thousands of people in a room is just that… a dream. Like many other dreams of many of other people. Dying in the scrap heap of broken dreams, promises and unfulfilled desires.

You call yourself a content marketer and you can’t even fill a program. Why do you bother?

This is resonant of the track that used to play in my head and sometimes, despite the overwhelming amount of evidence that demonstrates that the above is ridiculously far from the truth, sometimes it still comes up.

Ouch.

And as I was writing – the critic was writing – I switched into gratitude. I know. It was weird. All of this stuff showing itself to me. I turned instead to writing about how grateful I am to work with people I love, doing what I love. And that no matter what God, The Universe, Source has in store for me, this is a damn good life and a living I’m making doing what I love.

So I talked to the muse.

It’s a ‘she’ today and I invited her in.

I asked her “What shall I share with The People today? What do I need to hear today? How can I be of service today?”

And it clicked in. I realised that what I needed to hear and what I needed to share is exactly this message. This needs to get out there.

Since when did visibility, marketing and service need to be about you?

I mean, of course, it’s your face that’s going out there on the internets. Its your heart, soul and energy that is going into what you’re creating and into what you’re doing….. but it’s not really about you.

When you are putting yourself out there, you’re not doing it for the attention, really. Well, attention is the by-product of what you’re doing. But you’re putting yourself out there so you can connect with the people you want to help.

You want to help people, don’t you?

You want to do more of what you do with more people, right?

Then, putting yourself out there is about THEM first and you second.

Obviously the payoff is that you benefit financially when people buy from you but wouldn’t you be doing what you’re doing even if you weren’t being financially rewarded at the rate you want to be?

Don’t you want to change the world?

Don’t you want to help people?

Don’t you want to inspire, motivate and educate people to have a better life?

To have more?

To be more?

To level up?

To live a life of LIVING rather than just surviving?

Every single person I work with is in THIS space.

When you find a way to tap into the muse, to tap into what you need to do for your people, it shifts the need for you to feel like you have to PUSH the shit uphill to try and make it work.

I’ve done it the other way, you guys. Where I was driven primarily by money.

By trying to prove myself (even though I wasn’t trying to prove myself) and show ‘the people’ that a woman, with kids and a husband who wasn’t around much of the year could build and grow a successful business.

Just freaking watch me.

But it wasn’t sustainable for me. It was great. It was a ride.

Hindsight is a wonderful thing, though.

Around 2017/2018 I declared to myself, line in the sand, that it wasn’t worth the money to keep going how I was. In fact, that if someone offered me $1M/year to keep doing what I was doing, I’d walk away.

$2M I’d walk away.

At $5M I pondered my resolve and wondered if it would be worth it. But I didn’t ponder for long. I decided no. It wasn’t worth the money any longer to do things that weren’t 1000000% aligned.

It doesn’t mean I’m not grateful for all that I had, for all that I did, for all that I learned and for all the people I had the honour of working with.

I just decided that I wanted something different.

I evolved, changed and realised something:

If I never made one more dollar doing what I was doing, I would still want to be doing it anyway.

This was a huge realisation. I mean, on some levels I knew it. But at the really front of mind conscious level, not so much.

I realised that I had a way out. And that was all I needed.

The permission (given to myself by myself, incidentally!) was that I could walk away. That I could do something else.

Towards the end of 2017 (Some 7+ years of being in this business) I was researching what job I might like to do. I thought I might go back into finance. I thought I might buy, renovate and sell houses. I thought I might learn how to export fruit.

I figured that I could reinvent myself if I wanted.

#PERMISSION

I took a bit of time off due to some other circumstances and came into 2018 with a different sense of play.

A sense of fun. A sense of FUCK! Let’s just go help some people, do things that are fun and see what sticks.

And I haven’t stopped!

The MUSE reminds me that I have to be in service.

That I am to LET THE FUCK GO of the need to control the outcome.

That MY JOB, MY SOLE JOB, is to show up, share what comes through and remind the people (you) of how you can work with me if you want to.

The rest needs to be left to do what it needs to do.

Elizabeth Gilbert spoke with Russell Brand in a podcast interview recently about how when a book is finished, and you know it’s finished, you need to let the book do what it needs to do.

The book has it’s own life, it’s own job and your job is to do the best that you can and then let it do it’s thing. (I paraphrase, naturally, but you get the gist).

Your job is to flick the switch and to remember WHY you’re doing this

You’re doing this so you can help people.

And sometimes that critic will tell you that you’re not going to reach them. That you’re not going to find your people. That people aren’t going to buy. That you’re not good enough, not pretty enough, not marketable enough, not sassy enough, not funny enough and all the other shit that this little bastard whispers in your ear.

You’re doing this not because you’re an egotistical bitch who wants to be famous for the sake of being famous.

You want to be VISIBLE because you know the payoff is that you’ll be helping people.

You’ll be doing the work that you’re here to do.

Be it teaching.
Training.
Healing.
Educating.
Inspiring.
Encouraging.
Motivating.

What you DO is the vehicle for that.

VISIBILITY is the petrol or the gas that fuels it.

We need you to step in.

We need you to step up.

We need you to let the muse in.

We need you to be of service.

We need you to be you!

So come on.

How about you do more of THAT?
