I do presentations for job seekers regularly. I did one today in fact. There were some people in there that haven’t had a job for a long time. There some that haven’t had a job since having children. There was a couple of young people that were looking to take the leap into the worksforce.
The biggest problem that they had was what to say when asked at the end of the interview “do you have any more questions”. I hadn’t truly thought about the impact of this question before running these sessions. The other one they had trouble with was the “tell me a bit about yourself” question!
What I said the job seekers was this: when you’re asked if you have any questions, this is a great opportunity to show a genuine curiosity towards the person who’s asking question by saying “YES! Actually, I do have a question! Can you tell me about how you got to where you are”. This shows that you’re interested in them. It can help be remembered because you’re showing the other person you’re actually interested in someone other than yourself and just getting the job!
The other thing was “tell me a bit about yourself”. They all said they had trouble with this question. I advised this: tell them something you’re PASSIONATE about! It could be cards or racehorses. It could pottery or scrapbooking. Tell them WHY you love it. Speak with enthusiasm and excitement and it shows an insight into YOU and into your personality. It can help you be remembered as that ‘person who loved ‘x’!’
