BEING CHOSEN
You know what? I like to be chosen first. A lot.
I like that people choose to work with me over other people! Too honest? Sorry. I LOVE it, actually. I have this little glow of satisfaction when it happens. Yes, I’m competitive.. but this feels different.
As I lay back on the therapist couch…
As far back as school, when teams were chosen, I was never chosen first. Nor last, but not first, either. It carried on into adulthood…
My first experience of the GLOW of being chosen was when I applied for my first job in a sports store. I really wanted a ‘proper’ job and wanted to make money (I’d been doing things like selling AVON and things like that in my neighbourhood prior to this) but I didn’t see myself as ‘sporty’… and to my 16 year old mind, in order to work in a sports store, being sporty was probably a pre-requisite even though they didn’t say that.
I was a horse-rider. Not really ‘sporty’, right? I played the violin and the clarinet. I categorised my books into genres and then alphabetically placed on my bookshelf as well! Yes. I’d make myself fill out the ‘library card’ when I took a book out!!! Hahhahaha!!!! I’d make up my own clubs, with official member counts topping out at 1 with lifetime membership guaranteed!!
But I digress….
I never felt like I’d been ‘chosen’ until I got that first job. I nailed the interview apparently, which was fun! I was pretty formal for the entire thing. A bit quiet. ‘Behaving’. Sharing the answers to basic maths questions in case there was a 30% off sale and things like that. But I couldn’t but help at the end, to let the joker in me out. Gary, the interview said thank you and have a good night! And my parting words were “I hope the rest of the interviews don’t go as well as this did”!!!!! He replied with a “Hahaha! What a bitch!!!hahahaha” Mouth hanging open and me red faced that what I was thinking flew out of my mouth, I walked off through the mall to find my parents who were going to drive me home!
I still think to this day that my parting remarks were what got me over the line!
That feeling that I got chosen, over all the other people made me feel really proud.
A lot of the time, I’ve felt more ‘convenient’ versus ‘chosen’. There’s a difference. From boyfriends to friends to jobs…
So for me, when I learn that I have been chosen it lights me up on the inside.
I love that when my clients start working with me, it’s because they’ve chosen me.
I love that despite there being an endless abundance of ‘coaches’ out there, for whatever reason, they choose me. And somehow I’ve chosen them, too!
Having said all that, this doesn’t come from a place of being competition with someone else. I don’t go into anything trying to ‘beat’ or ‘win over’ or even influence someone to choose me. I just be me. I just do me.
And everyone makes the choice that they make….
I do love it though, when I am chosen.
Do you?
