I’ve written for loads of publications over the years about visibility and the power of showing up as you. No gimmicks, no filters—just fully, unapologetically you. And honestly? That’s still the hands-down, no-contest, best strategy for standing out, both online and offline.
But I had a moment of reflection recently that made me laugh a bit. When we look back through the highlight reel of our careers, some “stand-out” moments feel massive… and others, well, not so much. (Sometimes they feel like total blips, right?)
If you know me, you’ll know I’ve been in the coaching/mentoring/writing game for a long time. (Feels like in this day and age, saying that basically gives away your age. Ha!) Some standout milestones for me include being asked to write for The Australian, Money Magazine, and CommSec. Everything was humming along beautifully—until I got really sick and had to step back from the business for a while.
Then, totally out of the blue, a journalist reached out in Feb 2024 for a piece in Bunnings Trade Magazine. What absolutely knocked my socks off? It wasn’t a PR pitch. It wasn’t me chasing media. This journalist had found me—through my book Into The Spotlight, which I hadn’t actively promoted in a year! So that was… pretty bloody cool.
Today, I randomly remembered that chat and thought I’d search for my name and Bunnings. Turns out the article was published in Feb this year. Ha! How’s that for timing?
So, five things I want you to take away from this:
- Create content and put your stuff out there. You never know who’s watching or when it’ll pay off. It might not be immediate—but it’s always worth it.
- Things move S L O W L Y sometimes. The work you do today might land in someone’s hands months from now—or even years down the track.
- Be known for something, and stay consistent. I’ve been talking about being yourself and using that as your marketing strategy for over 15 years now. It feels like forever… and also like no time at all.
- Deepen your thinking. I know that might sound a bit wanky, but seriously: take the time to create your own IP. Whether it’s a book, a podcast, a series, whatever—build something that truly reflects you and your take on the world.
- Have fun with it. Infuse yourself into everything you do. That’s where the magic is.
I’m excited to be back in the saddle. If you’ve got a publication, podcast, or production (yep, nailed the 3 P’s there hehe) that needs content, hit me up. I’m ready for all of it.
It feels bloody good to be back.
