I’ve been thinking…..

I’ve been thinking…..

“Don’t worry—
you see,
to some you are magic.”
― Atticus Poetry, Love Her Wild

I’ve been thinking more and more about the way that we show up online over the past few days. I’ve been thinking about what I wrote yesterday and the real pandemic that spreads globally: Tall Poppy Syndrome.

I’ve been thinking about how we twist and contort ourselves in order to fit in.

I’ve been thinking about the posts people put up, sharing their ideas, their wit, their insights, their advice, their STORIES … and how there’s usually someone out there who decides that their truth is too much for them.

I’ve been thinking about all the people who are having their opinions belittled.

I’ve been thinking about the people doing things they don’t want to do.

I’ve been thinking about how much pain and confusion there is in the world.

I’ve been thinking about how people lash out.

I’ve been thinking about how people victim-blame.

I’ve been thinking about consent.

I’ve been thinking about the world my children are growing up in.

I’ve been thinking about money.

I’ve been thinking about anxiety.

I’ve been thinking about creativity.

I’ve been doing a lot of thinking….

Most of all, though, I’ve been thinking about you. I hope you’re doing alright. There’s a lot to navigate right now. Even if you’re like me and you tend to keep your head down, bum up, focussed on yourself, your reality, your clients, your work, your family, your mental health… there are still things to navigate.

And honestly… it can feel a little overwhelming. I don’t think it’s just me. So, I honestly hope you’re alright.

I long for the days where we are all feeling like we’re riding the collective wave of inspiration, motivation, and celebration. Daily. Not just now and then, but daily. I ask my clients every single time we speak – which is usually daily – what they’re celebrating. Most of the time, because they’re now so well trained, they have something ready to roll. Right off the tip of their tongue.

But for new clients and in new programs, this can come as a bit of a shock, because we’re so programmed to think about what we don’t have, the money we’re not making yet, the team we don’t have, the engagement that’s eluding us. The creativity that seems to dance just out of reach when we sit down and open the word document…. With the cursor flashing… taunting… teasing….

Generally speaking, the way we are taught to ‘market’ is by focussing on the problem that people are having. And I don’t disagree that this is a good thing to use. Sometimes.

To me, though, the things you should be putting out there are things that ignite your soul. That stir your heart. Talking about things that others are thinking about so that you’re able to build and create rapport. If we were having coffee, and I asked you where things were at right now in your business, you would probably gloss over the reality.

The things that we ‘should’ be sharing in our marketing are things that HELP people. Give advice. Provide steps. Help people!!!

One of the best things I think I ever learned, which I think was from Frank Kern, was to provide results in advance. The ‘method’ is service first. Helping first. Yes of course there’ll be something for sale at some point that you’ll either WANT to buy or not, but the key here is that it’s not just about telling people what they already know, enhancing their pain and then leaving them there if they don’t buy from you. I think that’s pretty shit, actually.

So, I’ve been thinking about that, too.

There have been moments throughout the past 11+ years that I’ve had my business, where I’ve been so damn focussed and relentless, working many many hours, doing all of the things all of the time.

Then I’ve had the times where I’ve wondered if I’m just damn lazy because I have other people doing things for me. I pay people to do the things that I don’t want to do.

I’ve seen people demonised in the last few days sharing stuff like that.

You can hire whomever you want to do whatever you want them to do! If you have the money and or the resources to do it, and this is what you want and need, then go for it!

I’ve been thinking about earning what we have.

I’ve been thinking how that’s total bullshit!!!!!

What I mean by that is this: if you believe that you have to work hard to get what you want, then I would be questioning if this belief is serving you.

If I was born into wealth (I was not born into a financially wealthy family, but we are insanely wealthy if you look at the love I grew up with), and I had the financial means to hire people to do things, would that matter? Should I really have to have ‘earned the right’ to hire people? Um. No.

Yet, somewhere along the way, the entrepreneurial world has created a set of rules in which you are accepted:

  • You have to have worked hard
  • You have to have made your own money
  • You have to have done everything on your own
  • You have to have had no help
  • You have to have bootstrapped your way to get to where you are.

You might have had resources to help you along the way, but you can’t really talk about it ‘out there’ because that’s not really celebrated nor accepted. I have seen people who have been made to feel LESS THAN because they had a bit of an easier financial start.

Additionally, if you do use your ‘bootstrapper’ story, even when it’s legit, there comes a time when people start to say “yeah, but that’s not as bad as where I’m at”…

I’ve been thinking about that, too!

I’ve been thinking about how we get told by many people that there are certain ways to make money.

Have a smaller program then upsell people into the next thing.

Have a high ticket program then upsell people into the next thing.

Have a mid-range program, and drop sell AND upsell.

Have a tripwire.

Do a launch…. But if it’s not a 6-figure+ launch we don’t really want to know about it!

Run an event and sell from stage. But make sure you do it in a way that has people ‘running to the back of the room’

I guess when all is said and done there have been some heavy things I’ve been thinking about.

The unfortunate lack of integrity that seems oh so prevalent in ‘this’ industry.

The small amount of people who ARE leading from a place of integrity, who are passionate about their people and who are actually mutually driven by SERVICE & making money. Not just one or the other.

You are not wrong for wanting to make money.

You are not bad because you are driven by that.

You don’t need to have an altruistic goal that you bandy around the internet sharing why you want what you want.

I want to make money and lots of it.

I want to be able to provide for my family.

I want to help A LOT of people. Millions of people.

I want to show my children that they can follow their dreams and operate from a place of integrity and still land on their feet.

I want to show them that no matter what people say out there (good bad or otherwise) that they are WORTHY of all of the things that they want for themselves.

That they are amazing, inspiring and wonderful humans.

I want to lead.

I want to feel and be passionate about what I’m doing and who I am being.

I want to be brave.

I want to be gracious.

I want to be compassionate.

I want to be fierce.

I want to be a force to be reckoned with.

I want ALL OF THIS and more for YOU, too.

So with all of that thinking, I want to hand the mantle over to you.

What do YOU want?

How do you want to do it?

WHO do you want to BE?

I’d love to hear about it.
