STRUCTURE AND FLOW
For me, structure equals freedom.
Sounds weird, right? I mean, I talk all the time about stepping IN and trusting that the ‘right thing’ will come out when it’s supposed to…
BUT I still have structure. I still use frameworks.
I can free ball – oops, I mean free flow 😉 – like the best of them, but for me, MY FLOW kicks in when I have a framework to work within.
The people who tend to love (and thrive) working with me, are very similar. They don’t want to feel like they’re flopping around at the end of a line that isn’t attached to anything.
They don’t want to feel like they’re rolling up to a venue without knowing who is going to be there.
I guess, for me, it’s something I’ve grappled with over the years.
I remember being in a mastermind where there was a bit of a diagnostic tool being talked about and thrown around, and how there was the polarity of creative and structured. I remember really really wanting to land ONLY in the creative segment. For some reason, I felt ashamed (?!?!), wrong, different, unsuccessful or unable to be successful, because many in the room landed squarely in the creative segment.
There was a bit of a scoff when I said I felt like I had a foot in each camp… and it was suggested that no, I am firmly in structure.
I still believe that have a foot in each camp, but sometimes it’s not at the same time and others it is.
To me, you can’t have one without the other. Structure can create flow – look at the image below. Even though the image is made up of very structured dots, there is a feeling of flow there.
And vice versa. When you have all flow, things fall apart because things get overlooked or avoided.
You can’t have one without the other. And, a predisposition to either or is not a bad thing, it just is.
Have you ever felt bad because you weren’t where you thought you ‘should’ be or who you wanted to be?
Or is it just me?
